Shaw Coyotes Physical Education

 

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

We would like to welcome you to the Shaw physical education program. It is our priority to offer a quality physical education program that will respect and enhance physical, cognitive, and social emotional development of your adolescent. Students will learn how to develop, maintain, and self-assess their health, fitness, and motor skills through physical activities in which they can participate for a lifetime. The goals for all students to strive for in our program are to:

· Acquire skills

· Understand principles and strategies of each activity

· Participate consistently and be fully engaged

· Improve their cardiovascular fitness

· Be responsible for their own behavior

Physical Education Department Standards

1. Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

2. Demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

3. Participate regularly in physical activity.

4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

5. Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

 

Physical Education Uniform (Purchased only at Kate’s Logos) Expectations and Procedures

$10.00 T-shirts: All T-shirts must have the student’s name across the white bar and last name on the back. No other writing on the T-shirts will be allowed. If you write anything other than your first and last name, you will need to purchase a new T-shirt. Lettering should be 2” high.

$10.00 Shorts: Last name on leg with permanent marker. No sagging is allowed. No cut out pockets in shorts; if pockets are cut out into the shorts, you will need to purchase new shorts.

$5.00 lab fee: Used to purchase/replace equipment.

$5.00 (optional) Shaw Athletics Cinch Bag: Ideal for carrying your uniform back and forth to school.

 

Sweats and/or sweatshirts may be gray or navy blue: Any Shaw Coyote athletic or team sweats are appropriate to wear in PE. Students may also purchase any plain Gray or Navy cotton sweats without pockets and/or sweatshirts at a local store. We do go outside for class throughout the year. The uniform will be worn under the sweats.

Proper shoes must be worn for your child’s safety. Athletic tennis shoes with laces or Velcro. NO Crocs, slip ons, Hey Dudes, etc. If proper shoes are not worn or shoes are not tied safely, your child may be asked to sit out and do an alternate written activity and one point will be deducted from the daily points.

Expectations and Procedures

Dressing out: Every student must dress out for safe participation. If a student forgets their clothes, clean Shaw PE borrows will be provided. One point will be deducted from the daily points for each borrow day. Students who do not dress out, or borrow clothes, will have 5 points deducted from the daily points.

Medicals: Students may use up to three nurse/parent excuses per nine weeks. A doctor’s note will be required to further excuse any student who has an injury which requires extended time out of class. A written assignment may be given in lieu of the physical activity time. See your teacher for individual make-up projects if you are absent from school.

Medical Awareness: If your child has a medical condition or is on medication that we should be aware of, please let us know. If your child has asthma, please have them bring their inhaler to class every day.

General Safety Expectations: Jewelry is unsafe during PE classes and should be left in the student's PE locker in a ziploc-like bag. All students should report all injuries to the teacher at the time of the injury.

Locker Room and Gym Responsibilities:

1. Cell phones will be left in backpacks or lockers for the duration of the class period. Phones taken into the gym, or outside after dressing out will be held for the duration of the day with the PE teacher(First offense), or taken to the office.

2. Line up for roll call with your class in the gym. Go to your locker when excused and change. Restrooms are for bathroom use only. Use the restroom before or after class. Locker rooms will remain locked during class time.

3. You will change, shut your locker and sit down by it until you are excused by the teacher.

4. Respectful voices and behavior are expected in the locker room.

5. Change back to school clothes by YOUR locker the last 4 minutes of class. Sit by your locker until you are excused by the teacher.

6. You are responsible for bringing your planner and writing your combination in it.

 

 

Locker Room Behavior Plan:

 

1. Students will be written up for violations of locker room rules.

2. Your teacher will log the incident in Infinite Campus and contact parents.

3. After repeated violations, your teacher will contact the administration, and alternate settings for dressing out will be discussed. Student will not be allowed in the locker room and will be given an alternate setting to dress out for 5 days.

4. If there are any more incidents, student will be removed from the locker room and dress in the clinic.

10 points will be awarded each day and include:

5 points for dressing out

5 points for participation

Behavior grade

10 points will be awarded each day and include:

-locker room behaviors

-language

-behavior during activities

Absences must be made up using the Shaw PE make up form available in the locker room or on Canvas.
